Pirelli does not agree with the tire change regulation after a red flag!!
The Monaco Grand Prix in Sunday was going to have a spectacular finale. Three drivers with three different cars claimed victory but with their tires in a completely different situation. In the first position was Sebastian Vettel with highly used tires which he had in his car since the 16th lap. In the second position was Fernando Alonso with his tires which had done 20 laps less than Vettel's. And in the third place was Jenson Button with a fresh set of tires. The differences between them were near to zero, and all those watching the race waited anxiously for the finale, which could be a battle that will go down in the history.
This battle, however, never came. The interruption of the race with a red flag 7 laps before the end which meant that the cars should take their positions on the grid for the restart, as the teams were allowed to change the tires. Thus in the final laps of the race the first three drivers were using a fresh set of very soft compound and overtaking passed into the realm of impossibility.
One of the disappointed of this development was the racing manager of Pirelli, Paul Hembery, who told to Autosport that viewers of the race lost a rare opportunity for a spectacular end and noted that the regulation should be changed: "I understand that there are safety reasons but I can see more from the perspective of the viewer. The people in the boats in the port told me shouting 'why they allow them to change tires? ". This took away something from the race. The big question is whether the tires could arrive to their limit, or the tires of Sebastian would have reached the point of their limit. We do not understand this regulation and we may ask the teams why they believe that they should be allowed to change tires. The distance of a race does not change. The cars were stopped and the SC was out. I do not understand why they were allowed to change tires, but maybe there is something I do not understand. "
