The awaited 2011 season has finally begun this morning in Australia in Melbourne's Albert Park. Karun Chandhok got as far as turn four before losing grip and crashing to the wall. After that an our later Pastor Maldonado with Williams set the fastest lap time. However very soon, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel moved to the top of the positions with 1m 26.831s(Mark Webber) and 1m 27.158s(Sebastian Vettel).
Behind them surprisingly the McLarens made their appearance before coserving their tires and letting Alonso in third with 1m.27.749s. After them, Nico Rosberg gained the fourth position with 1m 28.152s, and also at Williams after Rubens Barrichello’s 1m 28.430s best moved him ahead of the McLarens. Jenson Button raced with his MP4-26, with revised exhausts and floor, making a 1m 28.440s, and Lewis Hamilton was placed in seventh with 1m 28.483s.
Michael Schumacher’s 1m 28.690s placed him in the eighth position ahead of Kamui Kobayashi, who did a 1m 28.725s with his Sauber. Vitaly Petrov did a 1m 28.765s. His team mate Nick Heidfeld was 12th on 1m 28.928s, separated from the Russian by Felipe Massa, who made the lap in 1m 28.842s best.
Tire wear on both the hard, and the soft, was as significant as expected.
Behind the fast drivers, Adrian Sutil was 13th with Force India lapping a 1m 29.314s, being followed by Sebastien Buemi withToro Rosso on 1m 29.328s, Maldonado on 1m 29.403s, Daniel Ricciardo on 1m 29.468s, Sergio Perez on 1m 29.643s, Nico Hulkenberg on 1m 31.002s, and Heikki Kovalainen on 1m 32.428s.
The Virgins were off the pace, with Jerome D’Ambrosio lapping his MVR-02 in 1m 35.282s ahead of team mate Timo Glock on 1m 35.289s.
Chandhok did not take further part after his early indiscretion, while the HRT did not ran their cars because their rear ends were still under construction.
