The group has made a big step forward this year and I believe I can contribute to the development of the car with my experience. "
Statements were also made by John Booth, the head director of the group: "We welcome Sakon Yamamoto with great pleasure in Virgin Racing as a reserved driver for the first three GPs. Sakon will observe the drivers and also take part in meetings with the engineers so as we will be able to make sure that he is fully informed, if any last-minute replacement is need .
“As everyone is aware it is a very difficult time in Japan right now and any good news is much welcomed. I hope the people back home will feel positive about my latest F1 role as I would like to do everything possible to help them.”
